MERRIGNEE SIRES

The breeding objectives at Merrignee is to provide the Merino industry with the traditional fine wool style demanded by buyers and mills through crimp frequency, staple length, consistent micron and high comfort factors, without compromising on carcass, ease of care, doing ability, high fertility and lambing survival rate.

This is done through careful and diligent consideration and selection within the Merrignee stud stock as well as for any external rams introduced into the stud. By participating in Merino shows plus undertaking visual assessments alongside annual figure testing, stud benchmarking and subjective tests, Merrignee strives to identify superior stud stock that will benefit a productive Merino industry, both at stud level and in commercial operations.

Merrignee shifts traits and microns over time to continually improve our Merino stud sheep by focusing on the profit drivers of micron, style of fleece character and crimp definition alongside high fleece weights and large frames with square stance to maintain fertility, lambing percentages and doing ability in touch climate conditions. All our sires are selected to further drive this continual improvement.

Each year Merrignee undertakes in-paddock joining alongside a laparoscopic AI program using both stud semen sires and specially selected outside sires that are deemed to be suitable for Merrignee’s breeding objectives. Historical bloodlines continue to feature heavily at Merrignee, including Ringmaster, Brilliant Example, Uniform, Monarch and Murga. Over the last five plus years, Merrignee has established new bloodlines, including Magic, Patriot and Supreme, to continue the endeavour of superior white, waterproof Merino wool.
